Articles
Kata is the Japanese word for a series of pre-arranged movements . These series of movements can be from 10 seconds to over ten minutes long. Korean martial artists refer to these sets as Poomse whereas Chinese martial artists will often refer to them as Taolu. These forms or sets are made to train students of various arts in the particular techniques and concepts specific to the said arts. They also serve as a repository of those systems knowledge. Many traditional martial art systems make extensive use of Kata training. Some systems, however do not.
What Is Kata and how is it an effective training method ?
Kata can be very useful if trained properly. That is to say that one must understand the meaning of the movements and practice them in a realistic manner. Occasionally, some people may not understand the meaning of movements or practice Kata to the exclusion of all other aspects of training(Striking objects, breathing, conditioning, free-fighting etc). In the end, the Kata training can be useful when done correctly and under the guidance of a qualified master. At high levels many martial artists can freely apply movements of one Kata with movements of another. This would become quite similar to western boxings shadowboxing.

Katas can also involve 2 people. Each have a role and specific movements to make in synchronysation and harmony with his (her) partner.
I belive they are essentially the containers for the basic knowledge of oneīs style. They form your body to a certain way of moving and your mind to a certain way of thinking (ultimately non-thinking).
To write you must learn words often printed on little cards or in a special book.
To practice martial arts you must first learn moves and attitudes often choregraphed into a kata.

We have a realistic application for every move in the kata. When a student grades they must be able to perform the applications. Senior belts must add an entrance and exit technic. This has been fantastic for retention...
We used to be Shotokan and now we call it Karate Jutsu...To us doing kata is doing jui-jitsu alone..like shadow boxing form is very important

I aggree with what the articule says that Kata is usful when studied along with other fighting basics. I have used moves from a Kata when free fighting to good efect.

Kata as learned in karate do was developed to be used by Okinowan farmers and fisherman to defend themselves in the art of TE the forerunner to KARA TE DO. The uneducated but by No means stupid farmers could not read or write and to posses any type of text on martial technique was illegal and punishable by death. Thus came the developement of kata.
Today it us not illegal to posses books and other text on martial arts and a vast majority of people are educated. My personal opinion on kata is that it an antiquated and an ineffective way to practice martial arts and that there are much more effective and productive ways to train.
