The choice to use bag gloves is really determined by the type of strikes being thrown on a heavy bag. For instance some Asian martial arts practitioners may be able to strike heavy bags with their bare hands if they strike exclusively with linear blows, cuts and back fists. Once someone uses hooks or uppercuts, however, they must use a good quality bag glove. Furthermore, beginners should consider using them so as to protect their fragile hands and thus be able to strike repeatedly without injury.
Bag gloves : Why use them and how to choose them.
Contrary to popular belief all martial arts gloves were originally designed to protect the strikers fragile hands rather than his opponents face. As boxers trained extensively on hard punching bags, the need to protect their principal weapons quickly arose. Consequently, gloves used to protect the hands during heavy bag work were invented. These bag gloves eventually became popular with many martial artists.
Good bag gloves are made of thick leather and are well padded. If you plan to use hand wraps (most people do) , buy your gloves slightly larger than usual. As of late, new wrist wrap gloves are popular. These gloves are similar to the Mixed Martial Arts gloves. They are less cumbersome, protect the wrist (hence no need for hand wraps) and leave the fingers open. For these reasons, many martial artists who like to use open hand techniques will appreciate this style of glove. For boxing and kickboxing, most people stick to the more traditional closed and well padded bag gloves. Vinyl bag gloves are not recommended for serious martial artists as they are not as sturdy as leather ones.
